About Me
My name is Rui Tian, and I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and a Clinical Member of the Ontario Society of Registered Psychotherapists. Additionally, I have served as an Executive Board Member of the Ontario Society of Registered Psychotherapists.
As a Psychotherapist specializing in Addiction and Mental Health Therapy, Chronic Pain Management, and Rehabilitation, and certified as a Solution-Focused Therapist/Coach, I have worked in several clinical settings, including hospitals, non-profit and outpatient community agencies, walk-in clinics, Family Health Teams (FITs), and private clinics providing psychotherapy (individual, couple, and group) and life coaching. My clients come from diverse backgrounds, including age groups (6 years and older), various sexual orientations, and varied social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
I have years of experience in psychotherapy, clinical supervision, life coaching, consultation, training, and counselling. My therapeutic approaches include Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Motivational Interview (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Kettamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Clinical Hypnosis, Emotional-Focused Therapy (EFT), and Family Systems Therapy, integrated with elements from psychodynamic, Rogerian, Narrative, Gestalt, and Interpersonal therapy. I also practice Harm Reduction and Relapse Prevention, person-centred care, resiliency building, healthy behaviours, leadership, creativity, and life coaching.
My expertise lies in mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma), addictions (substances, problem gambling, eating, sex, and the internet), developmental disabilities/disorders (ASD, MID, LD, ADHD, ODD, etc.), and dual diagnoses. I also specialize in rehabilitation (MVA, WSIB, OWN, LTD, mTBI, and traumatic injuries), chronic illness (chronic pain and other chronic medical conditions), return-to-work programs, academic performance (post-secondary education, students and teachers, workplace stress), parenting (child and youth), couple and marital relationships, and personal wellbeing/development. Additionally, I provide ongoing clinical supervision to Master-level student psychotherapists (Qualifying psychotherapists). In addition to English, I am fluent in Mandarin. I use both as working languages.
My journey to discovering and understanding myself as a clinician has been both long and deeply transformative. Each step along the way has been marked by moments of insight and growth, helping me to evolve not only as a professional but also as a person. The more I immerse myself in clinical work, the more I am captivated by the profound possibilities it offers—not just for healing, but for truly enriching lives.
Clinical work, I’ve come to realize, is about far more than just alleviating suffering. While reducing pain and addressing challenges are fundamental aspects, the heart of this work lies in building hope and guiding individuals toward realizing their fullest potential. It’s about empowering people to live healthy, rewarding lives, and helping them to actualize their deepest desires and capabilities. For me, being a clinician means facilitating a journey of growth, resilience, and self-discovery, both for myself and for those I have the privilege to support.
As a clinician, I am compassionate, hard-working, and resilient, with a strong commitment to continuous learning. My curiosity drives me to constantly update my knowledge and skills through research and training. Over the years, I’ve gained valuable experience in various clinical settings, including hospitals, community agencies, specialty clinics, clinical supervision, and private psychotherapy practice. These diverse experiences have equipped me with a broad skill set and a deep understanding of mental health care. I am confident in my ability to provide a wide range of services tailored to help my clients restore their functioning and enhance their quality of life. My dedication to their well-being ensures that they receive the highest standard of care, empowering them to achieve their goals and thrive.
