About Me
My name is Karah Kirkland, a skilled Social Worker with 29 years of experience working with people from diverse backgrounds. It is my firm belief that every individual has intrinsic worth and is a ‘genius’ in their own right. My job is to help illuminate these qualities in a non-judgmental and caring manner.
Growing up in a large family exposed me to the different dynamics within the family system. Within my large family were people who suffered different mental health challenges and addictions. Being the eldest of 7 children, caring for and guiding my siblings became my second nature. My love and passion for caring for others instinctively led me to pursue a career in a sector that thrives on helping others. My experiences whilst growing up and my desire to be of help to others persuaded me to study and pursue a career in social work. The foundational basis of my career pursuit has been and remains equipping clients with effective and adaptive coping and problem-solving skills.
I've had the privilege of working across various domains of social work and mental health, spanning child welfare, developmental disabilities, ASD, mental health for children, adolescents, and adults, community and medical settings (including Family Health Teams), LGBTQ+ support, motor vehicle accidents and private therapy.
In 1994 I graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Western University (formerly UWO) and in 1995 I obtained a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Toronto. In addition to my social work degrees, I have received training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT provides individuals an opportunity to challenge negative thoughts, worries and anxieties and develop a more balanced view of stressors and problems. In my years of practice, I have found CBT to be a very effective tool in managing mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety, including driving anxiety. I have also been professionally trained in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). This is a well-researched and proven treatment modality that is aimed at alleviating the impact and pain of trauma. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT Couples) is another modality I utilise when engaging with couples who have committed to working on and improving their relationships.
Meeting new clients is an opportunity for mutual learning, and witnessing their growth and insights brings me immense joy. My passion lies in supporting individuals as they overcome obstacles and fears to realize their fullest potential.
I wish you the best of luck on your counselling journey and I look forward to meeting with you and assisting you on this journey.
